</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">During the production I believe I developed vital skills and gained valuable knowledge as this was the first time I had ever been involved in the creating of a production. In the beginning of the production<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> i didnt really understand the work and effort it took into creating a musical, i didnt expect it to be so difficult and time consuming. it took me a while to understand how productions work and how they are staged and all the backround work that had to be done in order for the production to be a success. As the prodcution progressed so did my abilities as i started to understand more and more about productions and started to grow confidence. </span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">When working in groups I felt more comfortable as it was a team effort, I believe i contributed consistentley and wasnt afraid to get my point across. i was part of the graphics group and our task was to create the poster for the play. This was a big challenge as i knew the poster was the main attraction for the audience to come to the production. I struggled with making the poster as i felt my final poster was not good enough as it seemed to plain and dull. Thnakfully as a group we came together, combining all our ideas and making a poster as a group, which was a great success.</span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">Overall I had a lot of up and down's during this production, learning and understanding many things and greatly enjoying my experience. I gained a lot of vital skills such as team work, communication, listening and leadership skills, these will come in use for future employment. I enjoyed being part of this production and learnt many things which i never thought i would, and i am greatful for this valuable experience. </span></span></div>izzyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17399711894437140114noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5576472912833343009.post-68009917076219879082011-05-22T17:03:00.000-07:002011-05-22T17:03:38.587-07:00Health and safety in Theatre production<strong>Risk assesment</strong><br />
<br />
<strong>Pre Production</strong><br />
<br />
<strong>Use of power tools - </strong>Wear safety clothing/ goggles<br />
<strong>Cutting equipment - </strong>Use cutting mats/ cut awat from body/ dont carry open knives around<br />
<strong>Use of paint & glue/ solvents - </strong>Use water based liquids, make sure u clean up spills<br />
<strong>Using suitable materials - </strong>Check out fire retardency rules for particular venue.<br />
<strong>Heavy lifting - </strong>Lift in groups/ lift using knees and not back to prevent serious injury.<br />
<strong>Ensure that props are safe for performers - </strong>Make sure person in plant stays hydrated as they are going to spend a long time in a small area.<br />
<br />
<strong>Production</strong><br />
<br />
<strong>Stage blackout, tripping, falling & colliding - </strong>Use of torches, all scenery positions clearly marked on the floor<br />
<strong>Height hazard, falling of stage - </strong>Clear annoucments to the crew, pulling curtains during a blackout<br />
<strong>Props being lost, misused - </strong>Keep props on a specific table, logged and under control of the prop manager<br />
<strong>Moving scenery - </strong>All crew have specific, well rehearsed job roles<br />
<strong>Crowd control - </strong>Controlled ticket sales, staff on the door, clear signs, research the seating limit of the venue, seating plan<br />
<strong>Fire - </strong>Loud and clear announcments, signs and signals/ usual fire precautions.<br />
<br />
Whilst planning a production we had to take into consideration the health and safety situations which can occur during a production. During the production we had to make sure everything was running smoothly and had to stay aware of dangerous situations, such as spills on the floor, props laying around, cutting equipment left open and to many people in one room. Making this risk assesment guide helped me to understand all the things which can go wrong during a production and also helped me to find a solution on how to solve these dangeorus situation.izzyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17399711894437140114noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5576472912833343009.post-25609854506373447452011-05-22T14:40:00.000-07:002011-05-22T15:27:06.243-07:00Legal aspects<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><span style="font-size: 7pt;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span><stockticker w:st="on"></stockticker><stockticker w:st="on"></stockticker><br />

ASA- Advertising Standing Authority.<br />
OFCOM- Regulatory body for communications industry.<br />
<br />
These are organisations which are responsible for regulating all advertising in the UK<br />
<br />
These are a list of examples of an image or subject which can be assumed as inappropiate and offensive.<br />
_ Drinking alcohol <br />
_ Drug taking<br />
_ Nudity<br />
_ Smoking ciggarettes <br />
_ Violence<br />
_ Animal cruelty<br />
_ Death & injury<br />
_ Criminal acts<br />
_ People doing dangerous things<br />
_ Advertisers making false claims<br />
_ Sexual contents<br />
<br />
Looking at this list you can understand why all of these points portray a bad situation and can be viewed as inappropiate. If advertising these kind of situations, companies must make sure that they advertise them in a reasonable manor which is suitable for viewers to watch.izzyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17399711894437140114noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5576472912833343009.post-69949812596833684872011-05-19T16:31:00.000-07:002011-05-25T05:18:35.853-07:00Group discussion notes<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--N0ftmPE-JI/TdWP8eYoEII/AAAAAAAAAGM/WlyrUHNG0YI/s1600/group+discussion.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320px" j8="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--N0ftmPE-JI/TdWP8eYoEII/AAAAAAAAAGM/WlyrUHNG0YI/s320/group+discussion.jpg" width="265px" /></a></div><br />

Creating our own props took a lot of time and effort but was a great experience as it gave the play a more realistic look to it. <br />

This was the poster i personally made for the production as you can see it was to plain and probably wouldnt of had attracted an audience. I felt that it wouldnt catch the viewers eye as it basically seemed boring. when we showed all our posters to the client (Mrs Jones) she liked certain images fonts and colours from everyones posters and decided that we all should combine our ideas and make one poster as a group.</div><br />

This is the poster we created as a group as you can see it is a massive improvement from the poster above. This poster related to what the production is about and really caught the viewers eye. The dark colours, blood dripping font and a strong image represented everything about the little shop of horrors and what it is about. Overall I was happy with the look of the poster and knew it would be a success with the target audience.izzyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17399711894437140114noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5576472912833343009.post-60917168434209692992011-01-03T22:49:00.001-08:002011-05-22T17:32:41.079-07:00Evaluation<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">For this unit we had to set up a musical production called “The little shop of horrors”. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I personally have learnt a lot about theatre like setting up a production, staging and how important the audience is. I realised the ups and downs of being a production designer a </span><city><place><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">high point</span></place></city><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;"> being showing your work to an appreciating audience. Once we finished designing our production it was acted out by students from our school and was a great success with the audience, we received many great feedbacks. </span><br />
<br />
<span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Deadlines are vital for a production, when planning a production you realise how important deadlines are as if you miss one deadline the whole production can fall apart. I can now understand how much hard work it takes to set up a production and now feel I understand how much pressure there is for professionals working in the theatre industry as they can’t afford to make the same mistakes as we might have done.</span><br />
<br />
<span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;"> My role was in graphics and we had to design a poster for the production, we all made separate posters but then decided to combine all our ideas into one poster. I feel I showed good leadership, listening and communication skills working with my group as I communicated with others, voiced my opinions and listened to what others had to say. Before we started the unit I thought designing a production would be a simple job and wouldn’t take that much time or effort but I was wrong as it is one of the most hard and stressful experiences of my life. Overall I am grateful we studied this unit as it gave me a great aspect of life as a production designer.</span></div>izzyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17399711894437140114noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5576472912833343009.post-31351229100289937792011-01-03T19:25:00.000-08:002011-01-04T01:50:48.069-08:00Stage directions and terminology<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Stage blocking</span></b><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">: This is a term used when a theatre director directs an actor’s movement and positioning on the stage. In most plays the stage directions have been written in the scripts to help the actors with their movement on the stage when acting.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Sightlines: </span></b><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">This is a line of sight between the audience and the stage; a good sightline will help the audience see the whole stage.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Stage directions: </span></b><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">This is a similar term to stage blocking as the actors receive directions from the director; this involves the physical movement of the actors on stage. The actors are supposed to note the directions in their script.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Upstage: </span></b><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">This is used for the actors based at the back of the stage to keep them organised.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Downstage: </span></b><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">This is used for the actors, who are based in the front of the stage, this is important as the audience has a great view of the actors.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Stage right & stage left</span></b><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">: This is simply actors based on the left and right halves of the stage.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

These terms also benefit the audience as the actors are based all around the stage so the audience have a good view of the play. It is important for actors to learn these terms to help them feel comfortable on stage and to know where to be at what point</span></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />

Before we created the plant we had to take measurements of a real person as the plant was going to be operated by a person. Getting the measurements right were crucial for the production as the plant is the main factor of the play and getting the measurements wrong would of been a disaster as we wouldnt of had enough time to make it again. I really enjoyed building the plant as it was a great experience and helped me see what it is like building a prop by hand. Once we had finished designing the plant i was excited and anxious to see it come alive in the production and thankfully it was a great success with the audience.<br />

<span style="font-family: Calibri;">I was part of the graphic design group and we were in charge of making the poster for the play, we each individually made our own posters and couldn’t decide which one to use so we ended up taking all the posters and combining our ideas to make one poster. I feel we had an important job as it was up to us to sell the play to the audience by advertising it and making the right poster to attract the audience. Thankfully our posters were a success with the students and attracted a big audience to the play.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Calibri;"><strong>Typefaces</strong></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">This is some research i did on diffrent typefaces i explored for the poster this really helped me to decide how my typeface will look like.</span><br />

We did this by making a poster, a few of us made separate posters and then decided to combine our ideas together and make one poster. We also had to make sure our poster didn’t contain anything copyright. Our target audience was mainly aimed at children, so we had to make sure our poster contained the right text and images to catch the viewer’s eyes. We then made copies of our posters and displayed them around the school to attract the students. </span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Audience feedback</span></b></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">We interviewed some of the audience to ask them for their feedback on the production.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><br />

It was great to hear such positive feedback from the audience as we worked hard to create and design the production. I personally was proud to see our production coming to life especially the plant as it actually looked real. I am glad to have contributed to the production and I now know how hard and stressful it is to be a production designer but it is also a great feeling to see your production being a success. </span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><br />

</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">What attracted you to production design?</span></b></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">I fell in love with theatre design when I saw my first production and when I knew I had a natural ability with art.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">What problems did u encounter?</span></b></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">It’s a highly competitive industry, you have to be really skilled and have ambition to succeed. You work on a free lanced self employed basis and have to be highly disciplined with your cash flow.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">What qualifications have you achieved?</span></b></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Art and design, also interested in history and 3D design, I did a bachelors degree in theatre design and then a masters in Film and TV. Overall it took me six years to achieve all my qualifications.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">How is the pay as a production designer?</span></b></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">The pay is very good in Film and Television especially commercial work. In commercial work the designer can get in excess of £500 a day. It is a freelance job so you only get paid when you work.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">How do you deal with finding work?</span></b></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">You can hire a agent and they will look for work and organise things for you but they will take a certain percentage of your fee. You should also network with other people in the industry this will help you incase any of them have a job opening.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">What do you like and dislike about being a production designer?</span></b></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">It is varied and extremely creative and the pay is good, also a lot of travelling. The challenging things are a very high level of responsibility and stress, dealing with tight budgets and deadlines.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">What is it like showing your work to the audience?</span></b></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">You have to make sure your work is scene by the whole audience in the theatre. It is very exciting especially when you get a positive audience reaction. You realise you have a significant impact on how much the audience enjoys and understands the performance. It’s demanding a full time commitment.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">What is the most important skill?</span></b></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Visual and communication skills are vital as you need to communicate with a wide audience.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Have you ever had a bad review?</span></b></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Yes but only once, a member of the audience complained about not being able to view my production properly because of the stage setting.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><br />

We presented her all our research and work we had produced so far to give her an idea on what we were developing. She told us that our posters were to plain and suggested we make one as a group and join our ideas together. Overall she gave us positive feedback on our work and gave us ideas on how to expand on it. It was very important to discuss the progress with our client incase of any problems and so we could take her advice on how to improve our work for the play and how to make the play better for the audience.</span></div>izzyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17399711894437140114noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5576472912833343009.post-41058325699137221052010-11-18T12:25:00.000-08:002011-01-05T09:55:27.372-08:00Staging types<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

A mood board consists of visual images on a certain topic and is mainly used by designers to help them get an idea on what they are looking for. When I made my mood board it was based on the movie the little shop of horrors. I had to do a lot of research on scary looking plants, to do this I went on google and wrote a lot of different key words to help me find the right images like “scary plants” “little shop of horrors plants”” monster plants” and many others. These key words helped me find the right images for my mood board and made my mood board stand out and look good. After I did my mood board it helped me and my colleagues to design the set we were making of the play on the little shop of horrors as we created a huge scary plant just like the one in the movie. Using a mood board helped me a lot and is useful for anyone researching anything.</span><br />

We had to do this as the little shop of horrors was based in the 1950s so making a moodboard was essential for our preparation and helped us design our model sets.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

I will be researching posters, scary plants and typefaces linked with the little shop of horrors and I also have to design a poster of my own, I will be doing this by using Photoshop to make my poster look more professional and appealing to people as the posters will attract the viewers. We as a class have been split up into groups and are all doing different things, we are doing all this as our school is creating the play “Little shop of horrors” and we have to make the props for it. I found this very interesting as I have never done set design before and have learnt a lot of new things and now know how stressful it can be organising a play. I believe I also gained a lot of new skills by working in a group it helped me develop my communication and listening skills and also how working in a group means working together at all times.</span></span></div>izzyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17399711894437140114noreply@blogger.com0
